The Lifestyle: Prayer

Soak up more of God’s abundant life.

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated to go deep.

Every relationship needs regular doses of undivided-attention-time to thrive and grow. We can nourish our relationship with God by meeting him in the sacraments, in the scriptures, and in quiet times of personal prayer.

This simple outline for prayer helps you refocus your mind and heart, setting aside the time specifically for God.

Open to God

Settle yourself and turn your attention to God. Prayer isn’t a task to check off the list; it’s a relationship with the person of God who loves us and wants to talk to us. Whatever you were doing before prayer, let it go. Put the phone out of reach. Find a quiet place to be alone with the Lord.

  • Make the Sign of the Cross.
  • Breathe deeply in a minute or two of silence and stillness.
  • You may wish to repeat the name of Jesus or pray “Come, Holy Spirit” a few times.
  • Invite the Lord to guide your prayer time.

Pray from the Heart

Talk to and listen to God however you wish. Some options:

  • Simply talk to God about anything on your heart.
  • Pray ACTS prayer (Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication).
  • Use the Lord’s Prayer as an outline, adding your own words.
  • Pray lectio divina or Ignatian contemplation with Scripture.
  • Pray with a Psalm.
  • Use the Ignatian Examen prayer.
  • Dwell with God in a time of extended contemplative silence.
  • Write in a prayer journal, especially any resolutions or convictions that came in prayer.

Close

Gather your prayers and resolutions. Offer them to God in trust.

  • Ask for the grace you need going forward.
  • Entrust your petitions and resolutions to Mary or another saint and ask for their prayers.
  • Rest in God’s presence for one to two minutes of silence.
  • Make the Sign of the Cross.
